The Ticket to Heaven

A good resume gets you an interview. A good interview gets you a job. A good transcript gets you into college. A good life doesn’t get you into Heaven.

No ounce of morality will gain you access to God’s household. You can fill out your resume of righteousness and give it to God, be He will not care. You can write you were a good person, had integrity, paid your taxes, helped the homeless, remained a virgin until marriage, didn’t cuss and even served at your church, but God will give none of these things a second glance. A resume of righteousness won’t get you into God’s house; it will only leave you at the door knocking. There is only one thing you can bring to God, and it isn’t your resume of righteousness. The only thing you can bring to God is your sin. You can’t bring anything else! On your resume, write down all your sins and give them to God. When you do this, you get something in return: Jesus. Our resume of sin grants us access to the righteousness of Christ. We humbly give God our sin and He graciously gives us His righteousness. When we humbly approach God’s household, He opens the door for us because He sees Christ in us. No longer does our sin separate us from God, because Christ’s righteousness restores what sin has broken. Stop trying to enter God’s house as a got-it-all-together, cleaned up, righteous person. Come to God as a broken and helpless person in need of a Savior.

Just remember that a resume of righteousness won’t get you into God’s house; it will only leave you at the door knocking.
